Experience the Magic of Trohanny Cottage

If sleeping in an original stone cottage steeped in history and the whispers of the past sounds magical to you, then a visit to Trohanny Cottage is a must. Nestled in the rolling countryside of County Meath, just outside Kells, this 200-year-old pre-famine thatched cottage is more than just a place to stay—it’s a journey into Ireland’s rich and storied past.

A Home with a Story

Like many old houses scattered throughout Ireland, Trohanny Cottage has lived many lives. Originally part of the Maio Farmstead, it once belonged to local landlord John Radcliff before becoming home to generations of the McMahon family, who meticulously documented the farmstead’s history from the late 1800s through to the mid-1900s. After a period of disrepair, the cottage found new life when Áine McGarry and her late husband, Joe, took on the ambitious task of restoring it in 2000. The process was a labor of love—one that involved sleepless nights, hard labor, and a deep respect for the cottage’s original structure.

A Restoration Rooted in Tradition

With its original open-hearth fireplace, hand-laid Liscannor stone floors, and carefully thatched roof, the cottage stands as a living testament to Irish craftsmanship. Every corner tells a story, from the beams that still hold echoes of past inhabitants to the antique kitchen dresser sourced from Kerry, complete with willow-patterned delph passed down from Áine’s grandmother.

A Cosy & Authentic Stay

Today, Trohanny Cottage offers guests an intimate and authentic Irish experience. The house features underfloor heating, a fully functional yet traditional inglenook fireplace, and a charming kitchen stocked with fresh eggs, local bread, cheese, and a few sweet surprises to enjoy with a cup of Irish tea. Whether you’re relaxing in the Greek-style bathroom or unwinding by the fire, every moment here feels like a step back in time.

Trohanny Cottage is one of only two thatched cottages in Ireland listed on the prestigious Historic Houses of Ireland group!

More than Just a Stay—An Experience

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Boyne Valley, guests can explore nearby walking trails, take in breathtaking countryside views, or simply enjoy the warmth of the McGarry family’s hospitality. The cottage is also home to a delightful menagerie of animals, including three horses, two donkeys, two dogs, and two cats, who Áine describes as her “welcoming committee.”

For those who seek a truly immersive experience—where history, nature, and Irish heritage blend seamlessly—Trohanny Cottage awaits.
