The Spire of Lloyd — Kells’ Very Own Inland Lighthouse

Standing tall on the Commons of Lloyd just outside Kells, the Spire of Lloyd is one of Meath’s most distinctive landmarks — and thanks to its starring appearance in The Traitors*, arguably its most talked-about.

Built in 1791 by Thomas Taylour, First Earl of Bective, it provided much-needed work during a local famine, and once served as a grandstand view for the hunts and hare coursing that swept across these fields below.

The famine graves nearby are a quiet, sobering counterpoint to its grandeur.

Climb the 164-step spiral staircase on a clear day and you’ll see as far as the Mourne Mountains. Not bad for a Friday morning in Meath.

Guided tours run every Friday morning from March to September — booking is essential.
