Martry Mill – A Living Piece of History

Tucked away on the banks of the River Blackwater, just outside Kells, Martry Mill is one of Ireland’s oldest working watermills. Still grinding flour today, the Tallon family—now in their fifth generation—keeps the tradition alive and supply local supermarkets, hotels, B&B’s, and restaurants—so when you visit, you’re not just stepping into history, you’re tasting it too.

Step inside and you’ll hear the creak of ancient millstones, feel the hum of history, and maybe even smell the warm scent of freshly baked bread. The mill’s story stretches back as far as 1323, surviving famine, war, and even the Boyne Drainage Scheme of the 1970s, which nearly stopped the wheel from turning for good. But thanks to the local community, Martry Mill still thrives, grinding its famous stone-ground wholemeal flour for bakeries and shops across Leinster.
